What does healing really mean, in a world where capitalism rules all?

Written by Iman Homsi

When trying to navigate your healing journey, it feels like life gets in the way. It varies for most people, but a huge majority of the US grapples with financial issues. In the wake of recent mass layoffs, the rising cost of living, and food being exponentially highly priced – it makes focusing on healing increasingly difficult. When trying to stay out of what they call “survival mode”, it’s almost a question of, how?

You’ll get many answers: usually lots of encouragement to join workout classes, meditation, journal, among other aspects. As these are all avid responses, but not everything is feasible based on finances, and availability. What I encourage everyone to lean into is community help.

When we think of community it seems like a broad term, one that is out of reach, and not created by us. The thing is – community is what you make it! Gather your friends, or family around, and create a giving system with them. Someone can bake excess bread, and give you a loaf as you give them some eggs. Maybe you want to start journaling, and a friend has a notebook they can give you. Maybe you are overwhelmed one week, with no time to do household chores. A friend can come over and clean while you take a nap. Then you can return that energy by cooking them dinner as a thank you for helping.

We are stronger together, and we can create a supportive community with the people we already have in our lives. So call in your friends, open their minds to mutual aid, and thrive within the realms you can. This is the way to get out of a “survival mode” mindset, and turn to leaning on your community to stay afloat.
