SUSAN L. HESS, MSW, LCSW-IL, is an advocate, trainer, consultant in the areas of trauma informed approaches and intimate partner violence prevention and intervention. Her 20 years of direct experience assisting those who have experienced intimate partner violence, has fueled Hess’ commitment to advancing the practice of trauma informed approaches nationally and internationally.
Hess’ dedication to disseminating and advocating cutting-edge research and micro, macro and mezzo approaches to trauma informed practices compelled her to launch a Trauma Informed Nonviolent Standards of Care task group. The task group developed guidelines to integrating Trauma-Informed Care in domestic violence shelters throughout the City of Los Angeles. In recognition of her dedication and expertise, Hess was presented with the distinguished Dr. Marjorie Braude Award by the City of Los Angeles Domestic Violence City Task Force in October, 2013 for innovative collaboration in serving victims of domestic violence.
Hess is the Co-Founder of the Trauma Informed LA whose mission is to foster resilient communities that promote healing and well-being through collaboration, education, and community engagement. Hess is a Clinical Assistant Professor at USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, and has published several articles on the practice of trauma informed care.
Hess earned her MSW from USC. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Illinois and she is a Certified Teacher in Nonviolent Education and Parenting.
